Kyrene School District is facing some of the most important decisions in its history. Over the past decade, declining birth rates, an aging population, and limited affordable housing have led to steady decreases in student enrollment. Today, Kyrene serves about 12,000 students in schools built for 20,000, and resources are stretched across too many campuses, making it difficult to provide the level of support every school community deserves.
The Kyrene Governing Board established a Long-Range Planning Committee to address enrollment trends and maximize the use of facilities. After months of study, the committee reached consensus on a recommendation, which will be presented to the board in September. The recommendation is not a reflection of the quality or achievements of any school, but rather a reflection of Kyrene’s commitment to ensuring all Kyrene schools are better-resourced and positioned for long-term success. No decisions will be made until December at the earliest, so there is time for families, staff, and community members to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback.
This page is designed as a central hub for information. Here, you will find timelines, FAQs, background and updates to help you stay informed and engaged throughout the process.
Committee Proposal
Kyrene currently has six middle schools, two K-8 schools, and 17 elementary schools. The committee will recommend a model with four middle schools and 13 elementary schools. This recommendation is not final until the governing board votes in December.

Implementation Timeline
Kyrene administration has developed a timeline for implementation, should the governing board vote to adopt the Long-Range Planning Committee’s proposal in its current form. Due to the magnitude of the proposed changes, Kyrene would implement a three-year rollout on the following timeline.*
*Important: This timeline is based only on the current recommendation. District administration may need to revise the timeline, based on the board’s final decision.

Community Engagement
The Governing Board is providing ample time for community input before making any decisions. Six regional hearings will be held across the district for community members to make statements for or against the proposed plan. Families, staff, and community members may attend any hearing in person or submit electronic comments as part of the official public record. Regional hearings will also be streamed live for the public.

In the meantime, comments and questions can be submitted through the button below. All submissions will be shared with the governing board, and questions may be used to grow the FAQs on this page.
